Installing and Pairing Wi-Fi Curtain Motors with Smart Life

What You Will Need

  • Tubular Wi-Fi curtain motor with rod adapters
  • Curtain track or rod already installed and level
  • 220V power point within 2 metres of the motor end of the track
  • Smart Life app on your smartphone (2.4 GHz Wi-Fi required)

Step 1: Check the Curtain Track

The track must be level and straight. Any sag or curve causes the curtain to bunch unevenly. Use a spirit level across the full track length. If the track sags in the centre, add a mid-span support bracket.

Step 2: Insert the Motor into the Track

Tubular curtain motors slip directly into the track tube. Fit the appropriate rod adapter to the motor head (square or round, depending on your track brand). Insert the motor from the motor-head end of the track. The motor body rotates inside the track tube to move the curtain.

Step 3: Attach the Curtain

Hook the curtain ring clips to the track runners. Space them evenly across the curtain width. Clip the leading edge of the curtain to the motor's drive clip (the clip that moves when the motor runs).

Step 4: Route the Power Cable

Route the motor's power cable from the motor end of the track to the power socket. Use cable clips to secure the cable along the wall or ceiling. Do not leave the cable hanging free — it is a trip hazard and looks untidy.

Step 5: Put the Motor in Pairing Mode

Plug in the motor. The motor will emit a beep. Press the RESET button on the motor (or use the wire loop button if there is no external button) until you hear 2 beeps — the motor is now in AP pairing mode, indicated by a rapidly blinking LED on the power plug.

Step 6: Pair with Smart Life App

Open the Smart Life app, tap +Add DeviceElectrical → Curtain Switch. Follow the wizard — it will ask you to confirm the LED is blinking and will request your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi password. The app will connect to the motor and add it to your home.

Step 7: Set the Open and Close Limits

In the app, tap the curtain device and select Settings → Calibration. Follow the calibration process: the motor runs fully open, you confirm, it runs fully closed, you confirm. The motor stores these positions as limits.

Step 8: Create Automations

In Smart Life, go to Automation → Add Automation. Create rules: At sunrise + 30 min → Open curtains to 80%. At 22:00 → Close curtains fully. You can also control the curtains with voice commands if Smart Life is linked to Alexa or Google Home.
